Mental Health Benefits of Having a Pet

Pets help boost serotonin and relieve anxiety!

If you follow me on instagram you definitely know that I have a dog, Rudo. I can honestly and genuinely say that Rudo coming into my life has only made it so much better, especially my mental health. Whether it's chasing him around the house, playing in the snow with him, or him waking me up in the morning to go on a walk, he lights up my world. Oh no, I've become a crazy dog lady.

Anyways, it has been proven that having a pet can benefit your mental health! Let's explore some of the ways they do. Playing with a pet elevates your serotonin levels. I can vouch that this is true. The increase in serotonin in turn can often relieve depression and anxiety, this provides sort of a sensory relief. Setting up a routine for your dog can also help you structure your day. If you know you need to talk your pet on a walk or give them food in the morning you'll wake up at a certain time and kinda structure everything else around their schedule. If you're having trouble getting some structure this could be a great start! I know it has helped me out a ton. I schedule everything according to Rudo's bathroom time LOL.

When you are lonely pets can provide you with companionship and company. This explains the boom in new puppies during quarantine. The quality time with them takes away from other stresses in your life like the pandemic happening. They can help make you feel less alone and depressed during dark moments and remind you to be present and enjoy moments. Additionally when your social battery is all burned out, they help maintain a social connection. Now I'm not saying only talk to your pet and no one else but, it's a great break away from talking to people because it can get exhausting. This might even eventually soften you and allow you to let your guard down.

Pets can also be a way to meet new people. Before we got Rudo, I rarely left the house to go on walks in the neighborhood. I barely new anyone that lived in my neighborhood. But now, every time Rudo's playing with a dog I get to have a nice chat with a neighbor. I've gotten to know so many people that I didn't know lived in my own neighborhood. It's also super cute when all the little kids run up to your dog and play with them!!

Overall, pets make you feel safe and they provide a source of unconditional love. They add purpose and fulfillment to one's life. I honestly can not imagine my life without Rudo and he's such a constant source of happiness even though he can be annoying sometimes.

Moral of the story is: get a dog! or a cat, whatever floats your boat.
